The Benefits of Direct Primary Care

Jason Rogers shares both sides of two healthcare modalities: traditional practice and direct primary care (DPC). Being experienced in both, Jason tells about the ins and outs of the two. Concluding how direct primary care is a far more superior choice than the out-dated and highly marked-up traditional practice.

On November 25, 2020, Point Taken with Rina Bindi featured a compelling conversation with Jason Rogers, a certified PA and the founder & president of Starlight Health. In summary, Jason talked about the value of subscribing to direct primary care. Additionally, how it would save you thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Just to give an immediate example, Jason stated (about getting an MRI) “You can use your insurance to pay 2 or 3 thousand dollars, whatever your insurance charges, or you can pay them, not even me in this case, you pay them (MRI service provider) directly into $450 charge…” Yes, that’s about 85% less than what you should pay for through insurance.

The same thing happens with X-Rays, if I use your insurance it’s about 450 bucks. But if you pay them directly – $60.

What Jason is doing – what direct primary care is doing is cutting out the middle man. From blood work to lab studies, the amount of money you can save is exponential.

Medical System Issues

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_letter_spacing=”0.3px” text_line_height=”1.75em”]

“The problem is the entire medical system is built on a concept called fee-for-service… It goes back generations, to the very inception of modern medicine and it’s exactly what it sounds like. If you go to get a service, or if you go to the doctor’s office, you pay for the services that are provided…” But with those services in a healthcare establishment consists of a marked-up price.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||on||||||” text_font_size=”24px” text_letter_spacing=”0.5px” text_line_height=”1.5em” custom_padding=”10px|15px|10px|20px|false|false” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ box_shadow_color=”#009d96″]

The problem is built into those services. When we are paid for a service, it also includes the overhead. It includes the doctors’ salaries, the nurses’ salaries, the power bill, the water bill. All of those things are included in each and every service. So when you order a blood panel with 6 different lab studies, in each and every one of them has that built-in mark-up.

Moreover, Jason explained how insurance companies collaborate with hospitals and traditional practices, adding an amount to the mark-up. “The insurance dictates how much they’re going to charge for each and every visit in each and every service that is provided. As long as you’re in the insurance company, you have to stick with the pricing structure that they have. If you don’t, or if you decide to give a discount to a self-pay patient, then you get booted out of the insurance company.”

Doctors or PAs that switched to a direct primary care modality are passionate and selfless. They only want the best for every patient – everyone. But we’ve been hammered into believing that medical care, proper medical care, should be expensive. Yet, it is possible, and it should be possible that everyone has a chance to take good care of themselves. And have equal odds; of living longer and potentially fighting off deadly diseases.

With Starlight Health, an average for an adult patient, a subscription costs only $85 a month and you get all your visits. All the near cost services provided at that cost. Jason was forward about not pretending to be “insurance”, but it definitely is a form of protection. Plus with his connections, part of his services is connecting you to a specialist if need be. In conclusion, direct primary care is the way to go if you have no insurance or you have high deductibles.
